In a perfect world, we’d have lots of time to connect and network with all the people we’d like to get to know, and to put a lot of time into building our professional relationships. But in the fast-paced world of business, that isn’t how it works. Time for networking is often limited to an event, or in between sessions at a conference. That means we have to network smarter.

Whether meeting several people at an event, or arranging a one-to-one meeting with a representative of a company that interests you, these tips help you make the to most out of a short conversation.

Get your elevator pitch down

Be able to say who you are and what you do in 20-30 seconds. Whether you are networking at an event or holding a one-on-one meeting, the more efficiently and concisely you can sum up exactly what you do, the better. A solid elevator pitch means more time for meaningful questions. Here are a few tips to write your perfect elevator pitch

Go broad, not deep

When you’re at a networking event or convention, the point is to meet and connect with as many people as you can. That means not spending too much time on any one conversation. You don’t want to cut off your conversation partner mid-sentence, but try not to let the conversation get too tangential. Stay focused in order to make more connections.

One-on-one meetings

Conventions and events can be busy and stressful, so make the invitation more appealing by setting a 20 minute time limit.
